Weekly Election Update: Labor gets their Leader

  • The final Labor primary is upon us. Peretz the old and previously failed vs. Gabai the young and previously not a member of the party. No matter which way it goes, Labor is likely to get a get a post Herzog boost in the same way that you get super energized when you recover from a cold even if your apartment is still a mess. Based on the early polling, the boost is worth about 4 seats and, as predicted here, comes at the expense of Yesh Atid. A fun wrinkle (ok, my definition of fun might be different), if former Kulanu MK Avi Gabai wins, then he will not be able to be the official Head of the Opposition because he is no longer an MK. Weekly Election Update: Stupid Controversies Abound

  • A new, fantastically ridiculous controversy has hit the coalition. 14,000 new apartments were approved for the Palestinian city of Qalqilya. Ministers in the coalition are accusing Minister of Defense Avigdor Lieberman of giving approval for these buildings without a vote. That would be quite the scandal if the plan wasn’t approved by vote last September in the Security Cabinet. The ministers are claiming that Lieberman never explicitly explained the plans that were voted on in order to pass the plan. Prime Minister Netanyahu is claiming that he has no recollection of voting on the plan and that he intends to halt building until it is brought up once again.
